Powder flowability is related to particle size, morphology, surface state, agglomeration, humidity and testing methods; Hall failure to flow does not mean that the powder cannot be used in all processes.
Interpret the relationships between variables, not a single parameter
Explain the differences between flow test methods, powder condition, and field feed performance.
Confirm the test method first
Hall flow testing applies to powders that flow freely through the specified funnel. For non-free-flowing powders, an applicable alternative such as the Carney method may be used. Results from different methods must not be combined into a single interchangeable value.
Distinguish between powder and feedstock
Dry powder flow, MIM feedstock rheology and mold cavity filling are not the same concept. Fine powders may not perform well in funnel testing but still need to be evaluated in conjunction with binder, solids loading and injection conditions.
Check particle size, morphology and environment
Compare complete particle size, particle morphology, agglomeration, moisture content, storage and operating conditions, and then correlate the results with equipment feed and part defects.
