Apparent density relates to powder filling
For powders that flow freely through a Hall funnel, ASTM B212 can be used for apparent density measurements; powder moisture, lubricants, temperature, etc. will all change the results.
Tap density describes packing after vibration
Tap density alone cannot represent sintered density, but it can be used together with apparent density, particle size and morphology to observe powder accumulation and compaction trends.
Align test conditions before comparing results
Differences in funnels, tapping conditions, sampling and units will cause differences in results. Suppliers and customers should write out the methodology in specifications rather than just agree on a number.
