MIM shrinkage depends on solids loading, powder packing, injection density, debinding and the sintering cycle. Dimensional stability requires control of the entire process chain.
Interpret the relationships between variables, not a single parameter
Explain how solid loading, powder packing, injection density, and sintering regime combine to cause shrinkage fluctuations.
Shrinkage is determined starting from the feedstock stage
Differences in powder loading, mixing uniformity and injection-molded density cause local variations in shrinkage. Sintering temperature uniformity, heating rate and phase transformations also affect final dimensions.
The full particle-size distribution matters more than one particle-size value
The distribution width, coarse and fine powder ratio and particle accumulation will affect the green body state and sintering driving force. Both the particle size curve and the feedstock process should be looked at when comparing batches.
Establish dimension baseline and batch association
Record powder and feedstock batch numbers, critical dimensions, furnace runs and sintering schedules to distinguish material changes from process drift and mold-compensation issues.
