APPLICATION SUMMARYApplication notes

Locks and hinges require a balance of strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, dimensions and cycle life. Compare 17-4PH, 440C or custom materials according to the load-bearing and friction functions of each component.

APPLICATION GUIDE

Engineering focus: Stainless steel powder for locks and hinges

Review the material, particle-size, process and validation factors that matter for this application.

partsLock tongue, lock cylinder, lever, pin or hinge

First split the parts requirements by function.

Performance17-4PH Strength and corrosion resistance / 440C Hardness and wear resistance

Material selection depends on contact and impact conditions.

lifespanDimensions, heat treatment, surface and assembly jointly evaluated

Cycle performance cannot be guaranteed by the grade name alone.

01

Split parts by function

The load and friction states of lock tongues, lock cores, levers, pins, hinges and connectors are different, and material selection should be decided around specific parts rather than the entire set of products.

02

Different directions of strength and wear resistance

17-4PH can be used as a balance direction between strength and corrosion resistance, and 440C can be used as a high-hardness and wear-resistant direction; contact stress, impact and corrosive environments will change the choice.

03

Cycle life requires finished product verification

Sinter density, dimensional tolerance, heat treatment, surface treatment and assembly clearance jointly affect the opening and closing or locking life. Public material introduction cannot replace finished product testing.

Suitable part characteristics

Part requirements to evaluate first

  • Locks, hinges, levers, connections and small friction parts
  • Projects focusing on complex shapes and cycle life
Confirm before selecting the material

Also consider these manufacturing conditions

  • Loading, friction, corrosion and impact conditions
  • Tolerances, heat treatment, surface and life testing
