APPLICATION SUMMARYApplication notes

Watch and miniature metal components require complex forming, surface quality, corrosion resistance, strength, dimensional accuracy and consistent assembly. Evaluate 17-4PH or custom materials according to the component’s function.

The appearance and corrosion resistance come from the complete process chain.

01

Different parts have different concerns

Clasps, connectors, buttons, structural frames and small transmission parts are subject to different load, friction, appearance and size requirements, and performance priorities need to be defined separately.

02

MIM for complex miniature geometries

Cross holes, grooves, thin walls, curved surfaces, and multifunctional integrated designs may be suitable for MIM, but tooling, debinding, sintering shrinkage, and post-processing costs need to be evaluated together.

03

Surface quality comes from the complete process chain

Powder particle size, sintering pores, grinding and polishing, cleaning and passivation will all affect appearance and corrosion resistance. The surface grade and acceptable defects should be clarified during the design stage.

Suitable part characteristics

Part requirements to evaluate first

  • Clasps, micro-connections, buttons and structural parts
  • Volume parts with thin walls, slots, or complex surfaces
Confirm before selecting the material

Also consider these manufacturing conditions

  • Critical dimensions, appearance grade and cycle life
  • Material status, polishing, plating or passivation route
